Literature

An immense but all too common tragedy is when children are force-fed odious and boring books in the years when a lifelong love affair with reading should be bursting into flame.  In order to avoid said catastrophe, the method at Renaissance Tutor is to blend the Great Tradition while exploring a student's natural interests.

As readers know, generally one gains more in reading from curiosity than from cold-hearted duty. It must be remembered that students also need to be guided out of the familiar and into more challenging intellectual waters, otherwise it is unlikely any of us would have left picture books. Yet, the exception does not disprove the rule and the philosophy of Renaissance Tutor is that teaching is an art. The medium of the child is paired with the tools of the Tradition. Both sides must be considered.

When going through my "military phase" in grade school I discovered that I had favorites. As I burned through every book on the subject the kids section in the library had to offer, I always found time to return to the few I especially liked. I didn't know it, but this was the awakening of literary taste and criticism. So from Renaissance Tutor a resounding yes to matching literature to age and ability, yes to the classics, and yes to reading from curiosity.
